By default, WordPress decides the order your docs appear in. The Organize screen lets you take control and set the exact order your readers see, using drag and drop.
Documentation is not a blog. In a blog, newest first makes sense. In documentation, the order should follow the reader’s journey: installation before configuration, basics before advanced topics.
Without setting an order, a doc you wrote last week can appear above the introduction that a new reader actually needs first.
Put the category a brand new reader needs first at the top, usually something like “Getting Started”. Put reference material and troubleshooting toward the bottom.
Inside a category, order your docs in the sequence a reader would work through them. If your “Installation” category has docs for three different setups, put the most common setup first.
The Organize screen changes display order only. Dragging a doc does not move it into a different category and does not change what it is assigned to. To move a doc to another category, open the doc in the editor and change the selection in the Docs Categories panel.
AssistCamp caches its documentation queries to keep your site fast, so a change to the order may take a short time to appear on the front end. See the troubleshooting article on changes not showing up.
