Docs Categories are how you group related docs inside AssistCamp. They are the main navigation your readers use, and they are the part of your structure worth spending the most time on.
A category is a labelled group of docs, such as “Getting Started”, “Installation”, “Billing”, or “Troubleshooting”. Every doc should belong to a category. Your category names appear in the sidebar on your documentation site, each with a count of how many docs it contains.
Docs Categories are separate from the regular WordPress post categories you use for blog posts. Creating a docs category does not affect your blog, and your blog categories do not appear in your documentation.
You can also create a category while writing a doc. In the editor sidebar, open the Docs Categories panel and click Add New Category.
Open the doc in the editor, find the Docs Categories panel in the right sidebar, and tick the category you want. Then click Update or Publish.
A parent category holds other categories underneath it. For example, “Integrations” could be a parent, with “Zapier”, “Slack”, and “Mailchimp” as children.
Use nesting sparingly. Two levels is almost always enough. Three or more levels makes readers dig, and buried docs get missed.
Aim for somewhere between four and eight top level categories. Fewer than four usually means your categories are too broad to be useful for navigation. More than about ten means readers have to scan a long list before they find anything.
If a category ends up holding only one doc, consider merging it into a neighbouring category. If a category grows past roughly fifteen docs, consider splitting it.
Name categories after what the reader is trying to do, not after your internal team structure. “Setting Up Payments” tells a reader what is inside. “Module Configuration” does not.
Go to AssistCamp > Docs Categories, hover over the category in the list on the right, and use the edit or delete links. Deleting a category does not delete the docs inside it. Those docs stay published but become uncategorized, so reassign them to another category afterwards.
