A knowledgebase in AssistCamp is a complete, self contained set of documentation. It is the largest container in AssistCamp, sitting above categories and docs.
Most sites need exactly one knowledgebase. Create a second knowledgebase only when you are documenting a genuinely separate product on the same website.
Use a single knowledgebase if your site documents one product, one service, or one company’s processes. Inside that one knowledgebase, you organize everything with categories such as “Getting Started”, “Features”, “Billing”, and “Troubleshooting”. This is simpler for you to maintain and simpler for your readers to navigate.
Create more than one knowledgebase when you sell or support several distinct products from the same website, and a reader of one product’s documentation has no reason to see the other product’s documentation. For example, a plugin company with three plugins might create three knowledgebases: one per plugin.
The test is this: if a reader would be confused or annoyed to see these docs mixed together in one list, they belong in separate knowledgebases. If the docs are simply about different aspects of the same product, they belong in the same knowledgebase in different categories.
The most common mistake is creating a knowledgebase where a category was needed. If you create knowledgebases called “Getting Started”, “Advanced”, and “FAQ”, you have used the wrong tool. Those are categories inside one knowledgebase.
You can also create a knowledgebase without leaving the editor. While writing a doc, open the Knowledgebases panel in the sidebar and click Add New Knowledgebase.
Open any doc in the editor, find the Knowledgebases panel in the right sidebar, and select the knowledgebase you want. Save or update the doc.
No. If you leave knowledgebases empty and organize everything with categories, AssistCamp still works. Knowledgebases become useful once your documentation covers more than one product.
